Scott participated in the Manchester Dual Sport event near Wedgefield SC on January 29 2023.
Woke up Sunday morning to 31 degree temperatures and overcast sky with rain in the forecast. It was raining by end of the first 25 mile run. It was raining hard enough that I chose to not ride the second 25 mile loop in the afternoon. Had a fantastic day.
The route included large portions of the NEPG National Enduro trail which is used for the opening round of the national enduro series. They were expecting over 900 riders for the season opening event the following weekend. There were only about 125 riders at this dual sport event. The event was made under a special use permit obtained through Manchester State Forest and cannot be ridden at any other time. A big thank you to the Sumter Enduro Riders Motorcycle Association (SERMA) for hosting this AMA sanctioned event.
This was the first time I had used roll charts for navigation and is one of the reasons I attended this particular event. I plan to use roll charts from Sam Correro for the TAT so I wanted to attend an event that was using them. You cut up these papers into strips and tape them together and file them into a roll chart holder mounted on your handlebars.
Sam provides his roll charts pre-cut and each route is printed on a single strip of paper. The roll charts describe the distance between each turn and how to navigate each turn for the entire 6,023 miles we will be traveling and are designed for riding the trail from East to West. In addition to the roll charts we also purchased from Sam his section maps (now stored in electronic form in our phones to save space) and GPS tracks.
This is the roll chart holder mounted on the handlebars. It contains a hand written chart I made for one of the pre-trip rides I did in Arizona.
